Geographical position of Congo has given the country many natural resources. It is endowed with a river whose basin is considered to be the second in the world in the domain of animal and plant species diversity, a large forest favourable to the wood industry development, a river and its tributaries propitious for fishery development, a maritime coast around which a strong activity of craft and industrial fishing is already spreading. The soil is very rich and has an abundance of varied ores among of which are iron, potash, gold, brass, diamond, phosphate, oil (around 15 million tons of barrels per year) and carnallite. Only gold and, more intensely, oil are exploited to date.

Backbone of the physical communication system of French Equatorial Africa, Congo benefited from an early and varied industrial development in the sectors of agri-food industry, mechanical and metal engineering, chemistry, timber, building and civil works. The situation has rapidly deteriorated just after the access of the country to independence. Almost all of public companies have gone bankrupt following the economic crisis aggravated by the socio-political troubles of the 90s.

Measures such as privatization, administrative decentralisation, private and foreign investment securisation aim to reflate economic activity as well as create conditions favourable to a sustainable development policy and the fight against poverty.

In this section, you will find economic activities and capacities classified by line of business and by administrative region.
